Driver (New Version) (Transport needed from Ilford to Hornchurch)

Opportunity image

Getting out to socialise or carry out leisure activities can be impossible for some of our blind veterans and that is why our Volunteer Drivers can be crucial to our veterans.

By simply helping our veterans get from A to B safely, Volunteer Drivers help to prevent veterans from feeling isolated and they enable them to receive much-needed social engagement with their peers.

We are currently looking for a Volunteer Driver to support a veteran in Ilford get to and from a lunch club in Hornchurch. You will only have to provide transport to this veteran every three months or every other month. This equates to only four times a year or six times a year, that's it! This type of support can have a considerable impact on a Veteran's social life and their wellbeing.

The role of a Volunteer Driver is simple - you arrange to pick up a veteran from their home, help them get into your car, make them feel at ease and informed during the journey, help them get out of the car at the destination and vice versa. That's it!

Although you will be working independently, your manager provides on-going support and can be reached by phone when you need them. As a Blind Veterans UK volunteer, we also have a network of other community volunteers you can link in with, as well as a nominated Peer Support Volunteer.

Our Volunteer Drivers must be over the age of 21 and have held their license for more than 2 years. You will need to have your own car, but we will cover all reasonable expenses. This volunteer role can be flexible around your other commitments, however, we ask that you are reliable and punctual for our veterans.

You don't need to have experience of working with veterans or have knowledge of sight impairment. We will provide all the training needed for the role of a Volunteer Driver with Blind Veterans UK and we will support you to ensure that you feel comfortable and confident when volunteering with us.

If you like to drive and would enjoy interacting with blind veterans, please get in touch with us - you could be the reason a veteran is able to socialise with their peers and your support will undoubtedly have a meaningful and positive impact on their life.
