Befriender (Newspapers / Literature Hour / And much more!)

Our befrienders are key in making sure our veterans feel comfortable and settled whilst staying at our Brighton Centre. Whether they are a permanent resident or staying short-term for some respite care, your social interaction can make all the difference. Whether it’s a simple cup of tea and a chat, reading the newspaper, or playing a game, your visit can really brighten up our residents’ day.

For example, every morning volunteers will read aloud the newspaper to the residents over tea and biscuits. This is inevitably accompanied by some great quips from the listeners and is a fun way to start a morning. It is impossible to finish these sessions in a bad mood after being exposed to some of the great sense of humour that some of our residents have.

You will never be asked to do any personal care. Although you will be working independently, our care team is always about to lend a hand and there is a network of other volunteers for you to link in with too. Volunteers must be over the age of 18 years and understand the importance of confidentiality and relationship boundaries. The role can be flexible around your other commitments, but we ask that you are reliable and punctual for our veterans. You will be fully trained and supported so you feel comfortable and confident in your volunteering.
